Paul Sabin - July 20, 2019
Last night, while I slept, my sweet Steve came by for a visit that was all too short. I went to the kitchen for our regular treat time, and when I looked down there were not three, but four dogs surrounding me. Steve had returned as he was before his illness. Gone were the ravages of ill health. Here instead was the happy, healthy, and gorgeous little man who I love so dearly. When I awoke he was gone, returned to his new forever home. It did not sadden me that he was gone, for I know that he is safe, happy, and forever healthy. I pray that when my life is judged, I will be deemed worthy to join him. I love you, little man always and forever. |

Paul was one more Godly man. He told me the story of developing DWC but it didn't take off until Ellie DePrima, a Godly woman went to bat with him. Ellie & Paul donated their valuable time to see it through and they helped my Ali-Rose so much. Paul talked to me many times and gave me much comfort that Ali-Rose would get better. He told me of his hardships with his health and many lovely stories of his 4 fur babies. He said his Doxie Angel and Ali-Rose looked so much alike. Paul was in the process of writing a book of short stories about Dachshunds and sent me some of the stories. He was a very intelligent man and an excellent writer. This is one of the stories he sent me and it is so cute!
Tina and The alien tree:
When Tina was about six years old, she discovered that a small, alien evergreen tree had landed in our front yard. This three foot tall tree caused her a great deal of consternation. Her initial reaction to it was to bark while circling it from approximately ten feet away, occasionally charging at it, never getting really close. She carried on this way for some time, alternately circling and charging. It was only after I had walked over to the tree and summoned her that she approached cautiously. She established a post behind and somewhat to the left of me, apparently secure in the knowledge that the tree would have to get past me to reach her. She continued shouting her warnings at the tree, ordering it to vacate the premises. Several times she crept almost close enough to touch the tree, but would then jump back, to resume shouting her warning.
This tree was an unwelcome intruder in her domain. After several minutes I decided to call a halt to her verbal assault on the tree, and we returned to the house.
The next day the scene was repeated, with some variations. While watching her circle, bark, and charge, I concluded that perhaps I should just let Tina and the tree work it out on their own. I watched while she shouted her warnings at the tree, and as her circles became smaller. After some minutes her defense perimeter had shrunk to the point where Tina was circling at a distance of about three or four feet from the tree.
Occasionally she would lunge, shouting her warnings, (which I have always suspected included some K9 obscenities) but the tree steadfastly stood firm not yielding any ground. Finally I decided that it was time to once again intervene. I gathered Tina into my arms and carried her to the tree. Squatting down I held her close to this intruder and she sniffed it, timidly at first, but gaining confidence with each sniff. After a couple of minutes of this I put her down and she walked away as if nothing had happened. The tree was now accepted as a part of her domain, just as if it had always been there.
That tree became the central character in another drama one windy autumn day, when an errant plastic bag was blown too close to the tree and was captured by its needles. When Tina spotted that plastic bag fluttering in the wind she protested its presence loudly. She had accepted the tree but this bag was an interloper that she would not tolerate. Her protests were halted only by my retrieval and disposal of the bag.

My Angel once had her own Facebook account, until some curmudgeon reported to Facebook, that she was not a real person. She has asked me to post a story that she has written. Here it is. Adopting Paul, by Angel Sabin: Hello, my name is Angel Sabin, and I have joined Facebook because I want to speak in my own defense. I have been called an attention whore. What an awful thing to say, even if it is true. I crave affection, which, by the way, I return in full measure. I was surrendered by my previous human at age three because I refuse to poop outside. I do this for what I consider to be a valid reason. To me a yard full of dog poop is just tacky. If my human cannot get out and collect the dog poop for disposal, is it not kinder to put it where it’s easily retrieved, and disposed of? It is quite true that when I first came to live with Paul Sabin, there were dominance issues. I could not understand how a human could actually believe that they were the dominant specie. Our first altercation came when he tried to pick me up in an uncomfortable manner. I gave him a warning nip, but he persisted. It occurred to me that if I removed one or two of his fingers he would learn his lesson. That having failed, I then played the reticent role, to avoid punishment. |
On my second day here an older dog named Thumper, soon to be renamed Belle, moved in. Although she was not nearly as loving and affectionate as I, she quickly stole the spotlight. Paul seemed unduly impressed by her eagerness to “play ball”. Personally I think she has OCD. Belle’s statement that I had “no clue” how to play ball is accurate. I did, however, teach myself the game of keep away. My take on the game was to get the ball and retreat immediately to the bedroom. Once up on the bed, the ball is out of Belle’s reach.
Eventually, after considerable nagging by Belle, Paul would come to the bedroom to get the ball. My snarling defiance and refusal to surrender the ball was no deterrent to him. Finally he did learn. He could easily regain possession of the ball by giving me a reward or, as he calls it “paying the ransom”.
After a few weeks with Paul I got the shock of my life. He received a phone call from my rescuer informing him that she was picking me up to take me for what she called a “meet and greet” with a potential adopter. How could I be adopted? Was Paul not my new human? Was I THAT UNDESIRABLE? I had learned to love Paul, whom I now considered to be my dad.
Just moments after the call ended Paul called her back. I heard him say “you can’t have her. You can stop by anytime you like and pick up the adoption fee, but you can’t have her.” EUREKA! I have a home, and a daddy. I still don’t understand the basics of Belle and Dad’s “ballgame”. If I’m going to expend the energy to chase down that ball and return it to you, I want a reward. Not “good girl”, nor a head Pat, nor a tummy rub. Show me an edible reward, and I will release the ball.
Footnote from Paul: Angel eventually got into the habit of just leaving the ball on the bed, out of Belle's reach. That however did not work. Belle's a pretty smart cookie. She quickly learned that if she pulled the covers off the bed, her ball would come with them.

I contacted Paul several years ago to help with my husband’s Reggie. I had taken Reggie to the vet 2-3 times a week for the disc in his neck but nothing was really helping. I could see the grief in my husband’s eyes and I would often catch tears on his face. I made a vowel to find some way to pay for his surgery. I was a member of DWC and I contacted Paul. He had me set up a go fund me account and he set up an auction. We were able to have Reggie’s surgery. We talked often during that time. I could never thank the group enough for the help except to donate and bid on the auctions.
May Paul RIP. Thank y’all for all you do for our babies.

The world lost a great man, his friends lost someone so dear but the animals he helped lost a voice, a champion and a hero. He will be missed by all. Say hello to my babies at the bridge please Paul.

So sorry to hear this Ellie. But he is now at peace and in no more pain. I have several items that he has made for me over the years. I will cherish them forever. He gave me some moral support when I was diagnosed with cancer. I will miss him.
He and Betty White will have fun up there playing with all the dogs each of them have saved and cared for over the years. RIP Paul.

Paul was one of the kindest, loving man I know. He helped us many times with our fur babies. One time I told. Paul that I would hug him so tight I squish him like a marshmallow but little did I know he was a big man. I think that was when Paul and I became super friends !!!! He was a sweetheart.

Thank you all for your beautiful and heartfelt memories of Paul. Really made me feel good. I wish he was here to read them but he never wanted the glory just wanted to help any pup he could. As an admin, he was my mentor also. I learned not only a lot about charity work but also a lot about doxies and their medical problems. Thank you, Paul. I’ll miss you.

When my first husband died my dog was diagnosed with diabetes on the same day. She was not a doxie but Paul helped me take care of her! Hooked me up with Doxie Charities and Sadie's food, insulin, diabetic supplies and vet bills were covered for several months! When I started trying to pay it forward I would take my money for auction items to him so we could visit! He was a great man and will be missed by many! Love you Paul! Give my Sadie and Izzy hugs for me!

I met Paul Sabin many years ago when he applied to adopt one of our Doxies. That was Thumper who later became known as Belle. I took her to his home for a meet that day. I told my boyfriend where I was going complete with address and said if he doesn’t hear from me in 30 minutes send help…lol. A female going to a single man’s home who she didn’t know kind of thing.
If became obvious quickly my concerns were unfounded. He adopted Belle that day and later added Angel to the pack.
We stayed friends and often had pizza and coke together thru the years. He was instrumental in raising funds even before DWC was what it became.
He helped 3 of our rescue Doxies and they are all with their families to this day thanks to him and later DWC. I’m sad that life (our rescue has exploded in the last 2 years and my job that takes me out of town regularly) kept me from being the friend I used to be and still wanted to be.
Paul, you were a friend to everyone and a savior to many. Fly high, my friend, and give Belle and Steve a huge hug.
Angel and Willie aka Willi be will be just fine with the Lee pack until they are ready to join you and their siblings!

Last night my fellow Dachshund World admins and I found out that our dear founder and friend, Paul Sabin, had passed away earlier in the day. He was an amazing mentor, friend and lover of dachshunds. He and Ellie DePrima began Dachshund World Charities to help owners get medical care for their doxies when they couldn't afford it. I have been honored to have been a board member of this wonderful charity since its inception. And it's all because of Paul.
Paul, we will carry on the legacy that you began and we will do it in your memory. I don't think you ever knew how much you were loved by so many. You will be greatly missed.

May 21, 2016 - Day 3 of Dogs I love
Angel came to me the same week as Belle. She came to me a spoiled rotten 3 year old, and in 7 years I have transformed her into a spoiled rotten 10 year old. She can be the sweetest of sweets, and I love her dearly.

Paul and I talked on the phone fairly often a few years ago. My silly daughter who was living with me as an adult due to cancer and MS, heard me speaking with him one day.
She knew about him and our love of doxies. She came up behind me and very loudly asked in her made-up southern drawl, "mama, is that my new step daddy?" Neither Paul nor I could speak. We were laughing so hard.
When my daughter passed away, Paul was right there giving me the comfort I needed. I will miss his , "hello darlin".

Mr. Paul was a very sweet man, he made magnets twice for two of Oscars auctions. I feel blessed that Oscar was recognized by Paul and blessed that he offered me these items to sell to save Oscar.
Rest well, Sir, I'm sure you had so many grateful babies waiting to greet you at the bridge. Please watch out for my babies.
